A relay is a switch that is operated electrically rather than mechanically. Although there are various relay designs, those most commonly found in low voltage automotive applications are electro-mechanical relays that activate an electromagnet to pull a set of contacts to connector or disconnect a circuit. These are used extensively throughout automotive electrical systems.
